Prosser wins shootout

October 1, 2011

PROSSER, Wash. — After watching his Ellensburg counterpart grab most of the attention for 2 1/2 quarters, Prosser’s Ryan Fassler ended up stealing the spotlight in a key CWAC clash Friday night.

Behind four touchdown passes from Matt Bennett, Ellensburg rallied to build an eight-point lead over the fourth-ranked Mustangs midway through the third quarter.

Fassler took over from there, throwing two TD passes, including a 24-yarder to Wyatt Baker early in the fourth and Prosser hung on for a 32-28 victory at Art Fiker Stadium. Prosser built a 20-7 lead with its ground game, with Isaac Anderson scoring on runs of 2 and 51 yards, and Joey Hurtado going in from 16 yards out. But Bennett stepped up with three of his four scoring passes in a seven-minute span covering the second and third quarters. He connected with Kody Graham (7 yards) and Michael Wyatt (18) to give the Bulldogs a 21-20 halftime lead, and then hit Graham on an 18-yarder for a 28-20 lead with 8:08 left in the third.

Fassler threw a 12-yard scoring strike to Josh Lopez late in the third, but the Mustangs missed the two-point conversion to tie. His game-winning throw came with 9:54 left in the game. Fassler finished 23-for-28 for 247 yards, with Danny Raap catching nine for 84 yards. Anderson ran for 131 yards.

Bennett completed 8 of 15 for 155. Bennett also ran 23 times for 151 yards.
